Council approves roundabout design to increase motorist safety
In a 7-0 vote, the Prescott city council agreed to fund the design of a roundabout intersection on Highway 89, near the Phippen Museum with the intention of creating safer ingress and egress for museum visitors and Constellation Trail users who share the same parking area.
The nine-month design phase will cost nearly $ 260 thousand. Estimates for construction, says Engineering Services Director Mark Nietupski, will be developed in the next fiscal year beginning July 1, 2013. Nietupski adds that the city did a feasibility study in 2008 of five area roundabouts, including the proposed Phippen intersection.
Along with the construction of the roundabout, the city also is planning a 30-to 40-space lot on the west side of the highway for Constellation Trail parking.
Projected cost of the Highway 89/Side Road roundabout will be approximately $ 2 million.
